What is your Hemoglobin a1c Level? Understanding Hemoglobin a1c on Keto

Here are my notes:

  • hemoglobin a1c is a test that tells us the 3 month average of our blood sugars
  • the longer sugar is in our blood, the stickier the red blood cells get
  • most red blood cells last 90 to 100 days
  • people with insulin resistance have full sugar stores, so sugar stays in the blood longer than for healthy people, their blood sugars are higher than they should be, say at 110
  • most people don’t go very long without food, so they never start tapping into their sugar stores aka glycogen stores
  • normal a1c is below 5.7%
  • prediabetes is from 5.7% to 6.4%
  • people with diabetes have a1c greater than or equal to 6.5%
  • many diabetics get a continuous glucose monitor, which has a small fiber that goes through your skin and constantly tells you your blood sugars
  • if you’re diabetic, you should be able to get the continuous glucose monitor with a co-pay
  • if you want to know why you have a high a1c, the answer is in the glucose
  • normal blood sugar should be between 70 and 80

Let’s figure it out!  The Fasting Motivation podcast is not medical advice.

I will get my a1c checked every year, every 3 months if I am pre-diabetic or diabetic
